"Chess is not always about winning. Sometimes it's about learning. And so is life."
– Unknown.
Hopefully, our island’s young chess players will be doing a bit of both this coming weekend, as the Bermuda Chess Association (BCA) gears up to host the 2nd Annual ‘CARIFTA Chess Qualifiers Tournament’ on November 17th & 18th at the Elbow Beach Hotel in Paget.
The top performers in their respective categories; Under 12, Under 16, and Under 20 will be given the opportunity to represent Bermuda in the next CARIFTA Youth Chess Championship held in Curacao during the Easter break of 2019.
Last year marked Bermuda’s first showing at the annual event and saw a tremendous performance from our players, with Bermuda fighting for the Gold against Jamaica in the Under 12 category. This year the BCA is looking to send a larger contingent to represent Bermuda, including our island’s top female players.
“We are certainly on Jamaica, and other Caribbean countries radar now after our showing last year.” Said a BCA spokesperson. “Since then, many of our young players have honed their skills over the board and competed in other chess tournaments internationally. CARIFTA 2019 will be another great opportunity and learning experience for our young players, win, lose, or draw”.
New and experienced players alike are encouraged to register for the event.
