CARIFTA 2019 Qualifiers Invitation

The Bermuda Chess Association (BCA) is pleased to announce that the official invitation for the 8th staging of the CARIFTA Chess Youth Championship to be held in Curacao 2019 has been released, and the dates for the tournament Thursday, April 18th – Tuesday April 23rd, 2019.

In preparation for the event, the BCA will be hosting the CARIFTA 2019 Qualifiers Tournament on the weekend of November 17th and 18th at the Elbow Beach Resort. The rounds are scheduled to begin at 10:00 am sharp on both days, and players will be given a 15 min grace period after the clocks have been started to arrive at their board. 

Tournament Regulations:

 

System and Schedule of Play

  • FIDE rated Swiss System Tournament in 6 rounds.

  • 3 rounds per day.

Saturday, November 17th 

  • Round 1: 10:00 am

  • Lunch Break 

  • Round 2: 1:00pm

  • Round 3: 3:00pm

 

Sunday, November 18th 

  • Round 4: 10:00am

  • Lunch Break 

  • Round 5: 1:00am

  • Round 6: 3:00pm

  • Awards Ceremony

 

Lunch Break

  • Parents should note that lunch will not be provided at the playing venue after the conclusion of the morning rounds. Players are therefore advised to prepare accordingly and make alternative arrangements to either bring their own lunch or eat on-site at Cafe Lido at Elbow Beach’s Lido Complex. There will be sufficient time (at least one hour) for those players who opt instead to leave for lunch and return later for the afternoon rounds.

Time Control

  • 30 mins + 30 seconds per move, starting from move 1. 

 

Tie-break System

  • Result between the tied players if they have all played each other.

  • Greatest number of victories.

  • Buchholz Cut 1

  • Buchholz

  • Sonneborn-Berger

  • Age in favor of the younger player.

 

Pairings and Results

Players will be paired in accordance with official FIDE Swiss System rules. If players are found to be unrated, they will be paired by relative strength at the sole discretion of the chief arbiter.

The winner at the end of the 6 rounds will be the player who has scored the most points. 

 

The gold medal winners in each of the bellow six (6) categories will be given the opportunity to represent Bermuda at CARIFTA in Curacao 2019 as official players of our federation. Official players are given free accommodation and meals by the host country ($700 value).

  • Absolute Under 12: Born 1st January 2007

  • Absolute Under 16: Born 1st January 2003

  • Absolute Under 20: Born 1st January 1999

  • Female Under 12: Born 1st January 2007

  • Female Under 16: Born 1st January 2003

  • Female Under 20: Born 1st January 1999

 

Additional Carifta Sub-categories (unofficial players):

 

Unofficial Absolute and Female categories

  • Under 8: Born from 1st January, 2011

  • Under 10: Born from 1st January, 2009

  • Under 14: Born from 1st January, 2005

  • Under 18: Born from 1st January, 2001 

 

Players who do not finish at the top of their section in the official absolute and female category are still welcomed to attend as part of the Bermuda contingent for the tournament as unofficial players, but it will be their responsibility to cover the costs associated with the event.
