Bermuda Win Medals At Chess CARIFTA

Eleven chess players from Bermuda participated in the 8th annual CARIFTA Junior Chess Championships held in Curacao from April 18th -23rd, competing among 187 Caribbean players in under-20, under-16 and under-12 age categories. Preparation for the tournament began six months ago with a group of keen junior players meeting every Saturday afternoon at the Bermuda Housing Corporation on Church Street to learn and practice all aspects of chess. The training was led by instructors Sergey Goncharov and Mark Flanagan, who also coached the team during the tournament. Checkmates: brothers take New York by storm

Two Bermudian brothers, aged 5 and 7, claimed glory in a chess tournament in New York. Odin and Dylan Flanagan were crowned champions in the under-8 category in the first Grace Church School and Brooklyn Friends School Chess Tournament. The youngsters represented Warwick Academy against 30 children from top chess-playing schools in Brooklyn on April 6. Despite being the smallest team in the competition, the Flanagan brothers had the highest combined score of the tournament, with 5.5 out of 8. Dylan, the youngest player in the tournament, finished fourth overall, and Odin was sixth. Flanagan Brothers conquer New York

At the weekend of April 6th, brothers Odin Flanagan (7) and Dylan Flanagan (5) competed against 30 children from the top chess-playing schools in Brooklyn NY at the 1st Annual Grace Church School and Brooklyn Friends School Chess Tournament, representing Warwick Academy Bermuda. The top 3 players’ scores from each school were combined to get an overall team score. With Odin and Dylan only being a team of two they competed a player down. Despite this, they achieved 1st Place in the under 8 section with a combined score of 5.5 out of 8. They go on to represent Bermuda at the CARIFTA Games to be held in Curacao next weekend, together with a team of 9 other youth players representing Bermuda.
